International Press Review dated July 29 - August 9, 2024

Ukraine has received F-16 fighter jets within the framework of an aviation coalition that was established in the spring of 2023. The delivery of the fighter jets and their gradual equipping has been a major topic in the Western media in recent weeks. The Economist stated that Ukraine is to receive 79 F-16s, 20 of which will arrive by the end of this year. The rest of the fighters will arrive in batches throughout 2025.

Zelenskyy officially confirmed that Ukraine has finally received its first Western F-16 fighter jets. But now the question of the source of critical weapons for these aircraft is acute. The Wall Street Journal reports that the United States has agreed to arm dozens of F-16 being sent to Ukraine with American-made missiles and other advanced weapons.

In addition, as noted in Le Monde, the United States announced new military aid to Ukraine worth almost $1.7 billion, which includes air defense equipment and artillery shells, which the Ukrainian military desperately needs.

The aid includes $200 million worth of equipment that will be obtained from existing US military stockpiles and will arrive quickly on the battlefield, and almost $1.5 billion will be spent on new orders that will take longer to complete. This is stated in a statement by the US Department of Defense.

The European Union has also approved the first installment of a support package for Ukraine worth approximately 50 billion euros to support the country's economy during the russian invasion. This was reported by Bloomberg.

Also, according to the EU statement, Ukraine will receive €4.2 billion, which Kyiv can use to support public administration and strengthen financial stability.

President Zelenskyy recently gave an interview to the French newspaper Le Monde, where he said that any issue of Ukraine's territorial integrity cannot be resolved by one president, or one person, or all the presidents of the world without the Ukrainian people. It simply cannot be done. This is contrary to the Constitution of Ukraine. And so this issue concerns us exclusively.

Someone recently said: "What if Ukraine gave up its territories in exchange for something, for security guarantees, maybe NATO, maybe the EU?" There may be many such statements, but we must understand that no one has officially offered Ukraine anything. And Ukraine will never give up its territories. Those in power have no official right to give up their territories. For this to happen, the Ukrainian people must want it.

The receipt of F-16s is another turning point in the war that will significantly strengthen the position of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine needs at least 128 F-16s to provide effective competition to the russians in the skies.

I hope that the next step will be to allow the use of the received F-16s and other weapons to strike the military bases of the rashist federation as a means of self-defense. As I have already mentioned, Denmark allows the Ukrainian Armed Forces to use F-16s to strike at rashist federation. Great Britain and France, which have provided the Ukrainian Armed Forces with their long-range missiles, are not against strikes on russian territory. They are also supported by Canada, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, the Czech Republic, Poland and the Baltic states.

The U.S. has agreed to arm dozens of F-16 jet fighters being sent to Ukraine with American-made missiles and other advanced weapons, addressing a longstanding question about the Western aircraft.

Denmark and the Netherlands are preparing to send the first American-made F-16s to Ukraine this summer, and more will come later from Belgium and Norway. But until now the source of critical weapons for the planes has been unresolved.

The United States announced new military aid for Ukraine valued at around $1.7 billion on Monday, July 29, that features air defense munitions and artillery rounds that Kyiv's forces say they desperately need.

The aid includes $200 million in equipment that will be drawn from existing US military stocks and will reach the battlefield quickly, as well as about $1.5 billion in new orders that will take longer to arrive, the Defense Department said in a statement.

The European Union authorized the first regular payment from its close to €50 billion ($55 billion) support package for Ukraine that’s aimed at keeping the beleaguered economy running during Russia’s invasion.

Ukraine will receive €4.2 billion, which Kyiv can use to support its public administration and to strengthen financial stability, according to an EU statement on Tuesday. It stressed “the importance of allocating the money as soon as possible, given the difficult fiscal situation in Ukraine.”

Zelenskiy is pushing to convene the second summit before the US elections in November with Russia potentially present at the table. The efforts come as Ukraine and its western allies fret about Donald Trump’s return as president amid growing fatigue and lack of major breakthroughs on the battlefield.

“The most important expectation for the second summit is for it to shape major prerequisites for stopping the hostilities,” Yermak told Bloomberg in an interview from his office in Kyiv on Wednesday. “We need to end this war as soon as possible to get a just peace.”
