There was no rebellion. There was a restoration of the balance of power, checks and balances, which are being formed within the framework of a hidden consensus of Russian elites. This was stated by Oleksiy Kushch, an expert at the United Ukraine Analytical Center, in a commentary for Comments.ua.
"Putin's meeting with Prigozhin and Wagner's field commanders indicates that the assumptions about the staged "mutiny" seem to have been correct. There was no rebellion. There was a restoration of the balance of power, checks and balances that are being formed within the framework of a hidden consensus of Russian elites. By the way, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also emphasized that after this pseudo-rebellion, Prigozhin actually became a political figure."
Putin's power is perceived as sole. But this is not the case, the expert emphasizes. In fact, he explains, everything is run by certain elites who have distributed the main directions among themselves. And the same defense minister who controls the nuclear button is seen as one of the most important elements of such checks and balances.
"Putin, who has been in power for too long, tried to break this system. To bend everything to his will. As a result, he was put in a box (driven into a stall) with the help of the so-called Prigozhin rebellion," says Oleksiy Kushch. "In fact, there was no rebellion. But a clear signal was sent to Putin.
According to the expert, a significant part of Russian elites is dissatisfied with the fact that they are being "cut out" of the Western financial world as a result of sanctions because of the war against Ukraine and, in fact, the entire democratic world, organized by Putin. There are also those who fear an even greater escalation, including the use of nuclear weapons. After all, in this case, the war will definitely become global, with sad prospects, including for these very elites and their families.
"For some time, these behind-the-scenes priests, in fact, the rulers of the Russian Federation, put up with the so-called "svo" format. But they are not ready to put up with the format of a protracted war, into which the special operation has turned. And they are definitely not ready to accept the format of a global nuclear war. So they moved the Prigozhin piece forward on their chessboard. He has turned into an ordinary security officer, the head of a PMC, a kind of political figure on the scale of Russia," says Oleksiy Kushch.
He has no doubt that Putin's meeting with Prigozhin and the field commanders of the Wagner PMC a few days after the "rebellion" would have been impossible if it had been a real rebellion.
"So, it was not a meeting with rebels, but with representatives of the interests of some of the real rulers of the Russian Federation," the expert states. "Putin, who seems to be at the top of the pyramid, only personifies sole power. And behind him is the very same host of priests who pulled the ruler's strings with the help of a staged Prigozhin's riot."
